Poultry Capital to start 300 hens

Here is a rough estimate of what you need to start a farm of 300 birds. I assumed you want to keep layers

1. Chicks @90= 27,000 (US$ 270)

2. Feed. Here we must separate because for the first 8 weeks we give chick mash at 40 g / bird / day hence about 2 kg per bird over the period. With 300 you need 600 kgs of chick mash. Say price per kg is 50 shilling you need 600 x 50 = 30,000 (US$300)

3. Feed. From week 8 you feed growers at 80g / bird / day. Ideally this is up to week 20. This gives each bird about 6.7 kg. With 300 you need 300 x 6.7 = 2,000 kgs. With each kg at about 50 shilling you need 2000 x 50 = 100,000

4. Vaccines. Cost per bird per disease excluding the service fee is
Newcastle 1 x 300= 300
Gumboro 7 x 300 = 2100
Newcastle 1 x 300= 300
Fowl typhoid 5 x 300 = 1500
Fowl pox 8 x 300 = 2400
Total Vaccine cost =6,600

So the total amount would be 27,000 + 30,000+ 100,000+6,600 = 163,600 (US$ 1636)

Kindly note this is a very rough estimate. Services fees such as transport, vet fees are not included. The prices of the commodities can vary based on location. This also assumes you have land and a suitable shelter.

I however hope this give you a rough idea of how to get the cost.
