The animals might have been vaccinated while sick hence overwhelming the immune system. This happens when the immune system is struggling to fight an infection and introducing a vaccine which too is a mild form of infection stretches the immune system beyond limit hence compromising the life of the birds. Hence the recommendation never to vaccinate sick birds.
