General Knowledge Disadvantages of burning rubbish

Ann

Certified Expert
Burning rubbish (such as maize stalks after harvest) is not a good practice since it has the following disadvantages:
  • Destroys the organic matter in the soil
  • Kills or destroy the micro organism in the soil
  • The ash that remains alters the soil pH
  • Since the ground is uncovered it exposes the soil to agents of soil erosion
Burning of the crop residue is therefore not encouraged. The maize stalks can however be used as fodder.
