My hens are developing a problem whereby there is something growing around the eyes in the extend of covering the whole eye

Your flock has contracted wet type of fowl pox. Kindly squeeze and have the white substance drop out m. Separate the affected birds and manage them separately. Otherwise the disease is preventable by vaccination only and never mix vaccinated and none vaccinated birds.
