Lucy, A trained teacher by profession says her life has been an ambitious one, with the understanding that persistence is the vehicle that drives you to success. Having stayed in Canada for about 10 years, she moved backed to Kenya started a supermarket and ran it for about twenty years. While in exploration for something different to do she landed in farming.

First Experience

Her initial first-hand experience was not great while nothing seemed to work. She incurred a lot of losses which she felt she would never recover and felt she didn’t want to continue with farming anymore.

It was only after she met Benson, an expert in soil science who advised and encouraged her not lose hope and try again while using a different approach. She was asked to seek guidance from experts and carry out a soil test.

Following the instructions as advised by Benson, she got promising results. That formed the bases of her advice to farmers that one should not farm blindly thinking it is just putting seeds on the ground, but go to the extent of understanding your soil.

Sense of Money-making Farming

Soil testing is important because that is when you understand what you need to use to maintain good balance on nutrients and minerals. It allows farmers to decide which fertilizers and quantities to apply depending on the requirements. You spend more through purchasing the wrong fertilizers resulting to very low yields which makes you lose more money and time.

Part of the lesson that Lucy learnt is that growing crops on a well-balanced soil not only makes the crops yield more but there is reduced pests and diseases attack. The farmer reduces the risk of losing crops due to pests and diseases and saves money from the cost of buying pesticides.

Lucy has grown her profits and now owns nine green houses. She says if she gave up she would have lost the chance of making the all-good profits from her tomatoes, capsicums and Chinese vegetables farming.
