There are many things you need to factor in here and I have some questions for you to find out more.
  • Do you currently have access to land to start this farm?
  • Do you already have a proper structure built for these birds or do you need to build one?
  • What type of birds were you looking to get? Broiler, Kienyeji, Improved Kienyeji?
  • Did you want to sell these birds for meat or have them lay eggs?
Below are some costs I have seen along the journey. Please note many of these can be reduced by being innovative and making your own feeds!
  • Chicks (one day old, vaccinated): Ksh 100 x 100 = Ksh 10,000
  • Feeds: Ksh 50,000- To 4-5 months- This can be significantly reduced if you make your own feeds
  • Building Coup: Ksh 15,000-20,000- This is a one time cost and can be used for many flocks
  • Drinker & Feeders: Ksh 1000-2000
  • Vitamins & Antibiotics: Ksh 2000-3000
  • Miscellaneous: Sawdust, Labour, Etc: Ksh 3000-5000
  • Water, Rent: Not sure if you need to cost this in!
Total Cost to purchase and raise 100 Kienyeji Chicks for Meat: Ksh 85,000. If you have already purchased the one-time start-up expenses each flock will cost around Ksh 65,000-70,000.
